Three Thousand Years of Longing has the feel of an Arabian Night’s fable, filled with stunning beautiful scenes that invade the entire screen even when they are uncomfortable. The two stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton perform smoothly as the illogical couple they play.
The idea that a Genie has a life over three thousand years (we see many of his exploits over his journey) is different in this imagination filled film, which also sees a Genie falling in love with a very studious professor as he shares his life story. It’s a stretch but it works.
At times its uncomfortable but the unique subject and overpowering filming draw our attention to two characters who find affection that is lasting and not just a close encounter flowing from a blue speckled bottle off the bottom of the sea.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is not for everyone, but it is worthwhile for those who enjoy what is unique and creative.
