Ryan Reynolds and Samuel Jackson are back as: Michael Bryce and Darius Kincaid, Salma Hayek returns as Sonia Kincaid with a far more important and dominating role.
As expected this is not an action film even though it is full of action. This is a comedy with the three stars cavorting in comical and sometimes silly fashion. The silly segments are at times filled with vulgarity which actually add to the comic atmosphere.
The casting is perfect, Reynolds stumbles along hoping to be the greatest bodyguard and become the winner of the annual award for best bodyguard. He spends most of the film with blood on his face from gun shot splash from others, falling off a boat and being shot himself (it’s never serious). Jackson is perfect as the smart talking husband who is constantly looking to have a tryst with his wife Hayek who is very willing to share love making with him. Part of the joke of the film is their constant work to conceive a child. That comic line lasts right to the last sentence of dialogue.
There are unexpected character relations particularly with Morgan Freeman who is a part of the business. Antonio Banderas is a delightful evil Greek magnet who will do anything to save Greece from being removed from the western alliance. He looks the part with big white hair that looks like Liberace. Hayek very effectively plays a sexy woman who uses her figure to control the guys at all levels.
The surprises are fun to watch and the plot is simple, everyone is about the process of attempting to kill someone else with a number of twists.
The laughs are what makes it work, don’t take anything too seriously and the film is a good popcorn comedy.
