
Michael Showalter tries to instill heartwarming allure into a gay-centric comedy-drama, but just doesn’t have the fair intended as derived from a Michael Ausiello book.
Not that Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge don’t have their moments as leads deal a major blow in their relationship in Spoiler Alert. But, it fails to consistently rivet, say, like Bros. There are decent underlying turns from the like of Bill Irwin and, especially the venerable Sally Field (familiar to tis sort of far as one recalls her passionate matriarch in 1989’s Steel Magnolias).
Yet you don’t need to reference the title to profess that the necessary warmth and sincerity proffered is less natural than bland.
