An effective translation of a comic strip into an action film, it is even more effective than Spider-Man: No Way Home and rivals the 1993 Batman, Mask of the Phantasm which was on my top ten list that year.
The use of comic book stills that float and turn into activity are unique and give the impression that one is reading a comic strip that floats into imagination movement and connection with each box filled with the bright colors that Sunday comics have.
Clearly the best animated film so far this year it will be around when academy award nominations are announced. The use of split screens which give different views of the same scene add to the uniqueness, along with a very effective musical sound track that enlarges what we see demanding attention.
While the film is in constant action the script also allows time for the characters to impress those who are watching. Each has an attractiveness from the blond teen Spider Woman, Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and Rio Morales who is the Puerto-Rican mother of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). Jefferson Davis, Miles father is voiced by Brian Tyree Henry and looks like a tall powerful tree with a square jaw.
But they appear real, the two teens Spider Woman and Spider Man in this Spider-verse are 15 and have difficulty understanding parents as the parents struggle to understand what is happening to the two kids. Interestingly his father wonder why this white girl is in his bedroom, we know, she swung in on a spider rope, and his mother can’t understand how he received A in physics and math but only B+ in Spanish her native language.
The script moves Miles through the Spider-verse somewhat like Billy Pilgrim in Slaughter House 5 from 1972, in which he is free to roam from time to time. Here Miles travels the Spider-verse meeting up with a number of Spidermen and women including the dark Spot who he battles with (Jason Schwartzman). Even Peter Parker shows up with his little daughter named Mayday with Mary Jane Watson as her mother.
There appears to be a great deal of care that worked itself into this film, and therefore, for fans it will be wonderful, for folks who just enjoy a truly good film they will be impressed.
