Meg 2 is an underwater captivity film in which a group of explorers, in this case begin at the bottom of a deep trench with their escape equipment failing and the escape pod no longer available. The evil owners have no intension of saving them.
Rather than spending the energy of the film dealing with survival from the Trench, the script doesn’t leave the team on the bottom of the ocean to fight The Meg, it carries them on a path that leads to an island of fun and pleasure filled with innocent swimmers who will face the wrath of the big fish.
The film brings us into many active locations and the hero must lead the team as they battle their way through more water creatures in sensational battle scenes aided by GCI, But rather than establishing one menace, new dangers jump up regularly diluting the strong effect the Meg shark established in the first film.
Credit must be given to the animators of the opening scene which is particularly effective in 3D. It is probably the highlight of the film as it shows each animal absorbed by the next larger creature.
Meg 2 The Trench isn’t as deep as the original Meg or as menacing, but it is Summer light entertainment and the little dog survives again.
