You've Got Mail

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in this remake of the Ernst Lubitsch film -The Shop Around the Corner.  Having been a big fan of the original starring Jimmy Stewart, I was thrilled to learn that a modern-day rendition was in the works and eagerly awaited its release.  You've Got Mail did not live up to my expectations.

Meg Ryan is cute and she and Tom Hanks teamed together almost guarantees a good movie.  But, this film relied on their presence too much.  The film lacked the originality and great ensemble acting of the Stewart original.  That said, this is still a film worth seeing.

I liked the story's premise - that two people who know and dislike each other could communicate anonymously over the Internet and become soul mates. I enjoyed their on-line outpourings very much and wished their dialogue could have been stronger face to face.  I also missed the many endearing side characters from the original film and the heartwarming side plots.  I say, go see this one for fun, and make sure to rent the original - it's a great one.
