Clint Eastwood produces, directs and stars as John Wilson, a character based on director John Huston. He becomes obsessed with killing an elephant while in Africa to film a movie that is obviously African Queen. Jeff Fahey is the movie's writer, who acts as the voice of reason, while Wilson hunts for the elusive "big one" day after day. This role has more talking than in all of Eastwood's films of the past. He plays the Huston character as one who, although he will fight for and defend the maligned, cares not a whit for the movie crew or producers whose time and money he is wasting. He plays him as a selfish, pompous lout, but is somehow respected for his bravery. Eastwood must also he respected for not always doing the safe or expected in his movies.
