Jack Nicholson directs and stars in this sequel to 1974s Chinatown. Th story takes place in 1948 California where private eye Jake Gittis is hired by Jake Berman (Harvey Keital), a housing developer in a marital infidelity case. There's a shooting and Jake has to find out if it's premeditated or committed in the heat of anger. The premise is interesting, but it takes over two hours to unfold, and by then you just don't care. The settings, clothes and cars are authentic and the mood pure Raymond Chandler; however, the plot is complex and confusing. Characters unnecessary to the story show up periodically, and the editing is inconsistent. There are references to Chinatown, but after 16 years, who can remember? In fact, I'd like to forget that I ever saw this picture.
