Trapped

Trapped

Except for a wild climax with mayhem on a highway in the Pacific Northwest this film directed by Luis Mandoki (Message In A Bottle) and starring Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon is mostly an edgy thriller.

The rich Jennings family lives in a beautiful Portland, Oregon home and Abby (Dakota Fanning of I Am Sam) is the target for a quarter of a million dollar ransom by Hickey.

Shades of Ransom come into play after Theron's Karen is shocked when seeing Hickey in her TV room as she brings ice cream for Abby.

Karen is a textile designer and husband Will, the Irishman Stuart Townsend of About Adam, is her anesthesiologist husband off to speak on a new breakthrough.

Greg Iles' screenplay based on his "24 Hours" unfolds as a trio of dramas as Hickey and his cohorts, wife Cheryl (Courtney Love), and cousin Marvin, a thick-glassed, nervous Pruitt Taylor Vance are pitted against Karen, Will and the asthmatic Abby.

The stage is set for a big afterburner of a finale that has some logic gaffes as the FBI lags behind the kidnappers and hostages. Trapped works at its emotional intensity and tension especially between Bacon and Theron who proves her skill as a former surgical nurse.  But frustrating illogical moves by the characters and the reality of children being kidnaped limit the stunning effect of the high tension and brilliant climatic chase.
