Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina has been told in many ways over the years. This adventure is a musical animated version directed by Don Bluth (All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Land Before Time). This is a nice quality production with terrific music but it may not be as enjoyable to kids as it is to adults.
Thumbelina (Jodi Benson) is born from the center of a flower to her mother (Barbara Cooke) who always wanted a daughter. Thumbelina meets the prince of her dreams but is whisked off into the forest by Mrs. Delores Toad (Charo). From there she encounters Berkeley Beetle (Gilbert Gottfried) who takes her to the Beetle Ball. She also has encounters with Miss Fieldmouse (Carol Channing) and Mr. Mole (John Hurt) who wants to marry her.
The Beetle Ball is the most entertaining musical number and Cooke has a beautiful lyrical voice as the mother. And of course "they all live happily ever after."
Kids will enjoy this but not the way they enjoyed Aladdin and the Genie. Parents should enjoy it a little more.
