Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama

Reece Witherspoon as Melanie Carmichael has it all.  She's successful as a New York fashion designer, and has two great looking guys crazy about her.

Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) is handsome, polished and has just proposed to Melanie (in the middle of Tiffany's no less).  She accepts, but has to make a quick detour to Alabama, so she can secretly get rid of husband number one before her fiancé and his snobby mother, the Mayor of New York City (Candice Bergen) find out.

Melanie arrives at Jake's (Josh Lucas, a ringer for Matthew McConaughey) rundown rural house demanding that he sign the divorce papers that she's been sending him periodically and he has been returning unsigned.

Jake is scruffy looking and mad at his wife for taking off seven years earlier to make her mark in NYC.  However, underneath the yelling and name calling, they each still have feelings for the other.

What makes Melanie's decision between the two men so difficult, is that both are nice guys and as different from one another as the places that they now come from.  Jake is laid back, with a sly smile, and easy way.  Andrew is big city sophisticate with a gentleman's demeanor and millions.  Both are great looking as well.

The talented supporting cast made up of Mary Kay Place and Fred Ward as Melanie's parents are underused.

Witherspoon has a way of combining sweetness with a heavy dose of sass.  Even when she's telling someone off, she remains adorable.  Her terrific chemistry with Lucas (A Beautiful Mind) and the two of them make this romantic comedy a winner.
