Superstar

Molly Shannon and her catholic school girl character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, is my least favorite skit on Saturday Night Live.  As a five minute bit, it sometimes forces a smile but, stretching it to one and a half hours is just too much to take.

Shannon's act consists of pulling her skirt up, tucking her hands under each armpit and falling over whatever obstacle that happens to be in her way.

In this film, Mary Katherine's dream is to become a superstar.  She also wants to be kissed like the movie stars she watches over and over again, while working at her part-time job at the video store as a rewind clerk.

The object of her affection is Sky (SNL colleague, Will Farrell), the school's most popular boy.  Since he's dating the prettiest girl in the class, Mary Katherine doesn't seem to have a chance, so she tries out for the school talent show to impress him.

The only highlights are a couple of dance numbers performed by the class misfits which are choreographed by Mary Katherine's grandmother (veteran Glynis John) from her wheelchair.

Superstar is a one note idea with no where to go but down.
