Summer Catch

Summer Catch

It seems that Freddie Prinze, Jr. stars in films with interchangeable plots and interchangeable characters.  Here he plays Ryan Dunne, a young college drop-out who, as a pitcher in the Cape Cod league, longs to play with the pros.

On his off hours, he mows lawns for his father's small landscape business.  He first eyes shapely Tenley Parrish (Jessica Biel - TV's 7th Heaven) while mowing her rich father's lawn, as she saunters soaking wet from her pool; he immediately decides to pursue her.

The baseball story (which has surprisingly few actual baseball scenes) takes a back seat to the romance, that relies heavily on clichés: the rich father who wants more for his rich daughter than the poor, struggling boy can offer, and the like.

Besides Biel, the other female roles are unfortunately silly.  Beverly D'Angelo plays an older woman who spends her summers seducing young ball players (Susan Sarandon has nothing to worry about) and Brittany Murphy (so good in Clueless) is goofy as Ryan's promiscuous ex-girlfriend.

Prinze is a handsome actor with a charming vulnerability, he should look for a different character to showcase his talents in the future.
