Starsky & Hutch
Starsky & Hutch
Starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Snoop Dogg, Vince Vaughn, Juliette Lewis, Fred Williamson,
Jason Bateman, Carmen Electra, Will Ferrell, Chris Penn, Amy Smart

Based on the popular 1970's T.V. show, this remake is done with a humorous tone.

Starsky & Hutch were rough and tumble cops that captured the bad guys after a couple of rough fights and the inevitable car chase. This version plays it for laughs with Ben Stiller as dark-haired David Starsky, the role that Paul Michael Glaser made famous, and Owen Wilson is blond Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, originally played by David Soul.

Set in Bay City, California, the 70's music, hair styles and fashions add a bit of nostalgia, also Starsky's shinny red Ford Gran Torino certainly brings back memories (even though it's strange for an undercover team using a car that screamed out “look at me” from two miles away!).

The film opens with the two cops being paired up for the first time. They're investigating a dead body floating in the Bay, and the clues lead to a nasty drug dealer (Vince Vaughn) who's marketing a new kind of cocaine that has no odor and that police dogs can't detect.

Starsky is an uptight ball of nerves and Hutch is portrayed as an easy-going ladies man who's not against sampling a little of the drug stash they confiscate or picking the pocket of the dead body they've found. No wonder actors Glasser and Soul are less than thrilled with this new take on their series.

Snoop Dogg is funny as Huggy Bear, the pair's pimp-like police informer. His clothes and huge afro are as outrageous as I remember Antonio Fargas' take on the character.

The story of catching the dealer is amusing, but the real treat is the interaction between Stiller and Wilson. It's not their first pairing Zoolander, and they have developed an easy give and take. Even the many insults that pass between them come across with real affection.

Of the many recent remakes of old T.V. shows, this one is one of the best.
