This animated film from Sony Pictures Animation depicts the birth of Jesus from the animal's point of view.
Bo, the donkey (voice by Steven Yeun) works at a mill with a mean boss. He escapes the grueling job and teams up with his friend, Dave the dove (Keegan Michael-Key).
While trying to hide from his taskmaster, they slip into the yard of Mary (Gina Rodriguez) and Joseph (Zachary Levi). Bo immediately warms up to Mary, who tends to his injured leg.
The young couple are trying to come to terms with the realization that they'll soon have the enormous responsibility of taking care of the son of God. It's dealt with nicely in a couple of short scenes.
Mary and Joseph have to go to Bethlehem for the census and although the baby is near term, the couple leave on foot. Bo and Dave take off to be part of the Royal Parade. The animals and humans go their separate ways, but when Bo finds out that the king sent a menacing guard to destroy the baby, he turns around to warn them.
There's silly animal characters, especially a trio of camels and a sweet sheep who wants to be the leader of her flock. Christmas music plays softly in the background and the story of the birth of Jesus ends with the baby in a manger surrounded by the three wise men and animals of all kinds.
It's a sweet telling that is fun, meaningful and kid and family friendly.
