Someone Like You

Someone Like You

Here's the story three great looking singles work as producers for an Opra-like TV show.  Their boss, Diane (Ellen Barkin) looking unusually tanned and continuing her penchant for tossing her legs up whenever she sits, keeps them busy trying to book ungetatable guests for her show.

The three, Jane (Ashley Judd), Ray (Greg Kinnear) and Eddie (Hugh Jackman - X-Men), are more interested in their own relationships than they are spending time thinking about work.

Jane falls for Ray, a sensitive, sleepy-eyed romantic who seems too good to be true.  Guess what, he is!  Their affair quickly turns serious and when Ray asks her to move in, they find the perfect apartment.  Jane gives up her lease and on moving week, Ray breaks up with her.

Eddie, who was dismissed by Jane as a shallow womanizer, ends up being her roommate, because she needs a place to live.  She's soon bumping into a steady stream of women going in and out of his bedroom.  Jane now believes that all men are creeps.

Once she gets her heart broken, Jane turns into a bitter whiner.  Reading up on the mating rituals of animals, she likens men and women to bulls and cows.  This would have been okay if it was a throw away quip, but the theme is repeated over and over.   She even anonymously writes an article for her friend's (Marisa Tomei) magazine and becomes an icon for all women who have been dumped.

Judd is bubbly and likable enough to hold a film together and Jackman has an easy, sexy manner that's refreshing.  If only the story concentrated more on humans and less on cows, this could have been a romantic hit.
