Sleepover
Sleepover
Starring Alexa Vega, Mika Boorem, Jane Lynch,
Sam Huntington, Sara Paxton, Brie Larson

There’s a bit of charm and a giant use of movie “formula” in Sleepover, a teen-girl-on-a mission comedy.

John Hughes was the guiding force behind such benchmark 80's teen films as Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club, films that captured the essence of the teenage years so precisely that one might suspect Hughes must have been disguised as the lunch room table the kids sat at and listened to every conversation.

Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) is Julie, planner of the title Sleepover. When she and three of her best friends are challenged by rivals to a scavenger hunt, the winner to get a much-coveted prime lunch spot upon entering high school next year, the race is on.

There are missions that involve obtaining a teen hunk’s underwear, getting a guy to buy them a drink at a bar (the girls are underage) and much more. All involve a little ingenuity and a lot of energy.

There’s a touching subplot involving Julie’s pudgy friend, Yancy (Kallie Flynn Childress), and the unexpected dreamboat she find. There’s nothing new to the relationship, but there’s plenty to like; their encounters are handled with charm and grace that’s largely missing from the rest of the film. It is perhaps the saving grace in a limited weak film.
