The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption stars Tim Robbins as a quietly intense financial wizard imprisoned for the murder of his wife.  His fellow inmates, particularly that played by Morgan Freeman, become intrigued by his gentle manner and solitary ways.  He surprises them with his inner strength and maintains an affirmative view on life and his future throughout his lengthy detainment.

Even while in prison, he succeeds in accomplishing things which are meaningful to him.  His basic positive ideas about himself are preserved despite the severe trials he faces.

I left this film with a renewed recognition that we must all develop inner resources and a solid core to withstand life's inevitable setbacks.  Although the movie depicts an extraordinary profile of courage and hope, we all meet challenges which demand this sort of strength.

This film portrayed prison life in all its brutality - from sadistic guards to vicious initiations.  Both Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman gave exceptional, authentic performances.  Over two hours in length, the story unfolds slowly and thoughtfully.   I felt that it was too slow at times but the pace proved conducive to the deep thinking it provoked.
