Raynor (Jason Patric - The Lost Boys) and Kristen (Jennifer Jason Leigh - Backdraft) are undercover narcotic agents.  To make themselves more accepted to the drug pushers, they take drugs themselves.  They pop or shoot up every imaginable drug in an attempt to get close to a sleazy drug kingpin, played by rocker Gregg Allman.  Allman looks the part, with his long hair, scruffy beard and commanding demeanor; he's great.

Set in 1975 Texas, the film is dark and moody jumping from the seedy bars where druggies congregate, to stark, low rent tenements.  Veteran Raynor and rookie Kristen become more and more controlled by drugs and become part of the culture they are trying to clean up.

The acting is terrific, especially by the totally strung out Patric.

First time director Lili Fini Zanuck gives the audience a dreary, gritty look at the underbelly of society.

Films about drug addicts are difficult to watch; you feel hopeless watching the junkie slipping deeper into despair.  This is a well acted, well written film, but it's not a pretty picture.
