This ineffectual suspense obviously reminds one of a flawed, but more watchable Single White Female. One that should rack up more attendees on the distaff side during (a usually quite box-office) Super Bowl weekend.
The Roommate stars Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester as newbie Iowa gal Sara and her seriously off her meds soon to be BFF, Rebecca. They're at the ULA campus in a those swank dormitories, more like upscale apartments.
Danish helmer Christian E. Christiansen can't make much stick out of a stale tale such as this where a cute kitten name Cuddles and a boyfriend played by Cam Gigandet (see Easy A) have a tough time of it. Billy Zane (remember The Phantom, alas Titanic) is on hand to come on to his nubile fashion student in Sara.
It's Rebecca to the rescue to have Sara for herself as the latter finally begins to get the picture when meeting the former's family.
For those who well recall the Jennifer Jason Leigh/Bridget Fonda starer, some of the scenes, especially near the silly, more intense climax are dreadfully similar. The very comely Kelly (main squeeze of MLB superstar Derek Jeter and briefly in Just Go With It) showed more personality in her cameo in 500 Days of Summer. Meester, who showed a little more charm and more vocal chops in Country Strong is even blander in this disrespectful girl-gone-wrong hardly believable cautionary college tale.
