Kevin Hart and Ice Cube are back after their successful pairing in the 2014 comedy. They play Atlanta Detective James Payton (Ice Cube) and cop and future brother-in-law Ben Barber (Hart) in this action-filled sequel.
The story is familiar, Ben wants to prove himself worthy of a promotion to Detective, so he pesters James into taking him along with him. He talks him into joining him on a run-of-the-mill case in Miami, but when they get there, they stumble onto something bigger involving a crime boss (Benjamin Bratt) and one of his employees (played by Ken Jeong, who adds to the fun) who stole his money.
They hook up with a homicide cop (Olivia Munn) who tutors them on the ins and outs of how things are done in Florida, and soon they're embroiled in car chases, shoot outs and plenty of action. As inept as Ben is, once in a while he actually saves the day. During one of those car chases with bad guys shooting at them, he takes the wheel and his video gaming skills kick in as he maneuvers around the city like a pro.
Funny man Hart is always high energy and entertaining, and Ice Cube tries out every stern look in his repertoire , together they are very watchable. Director Tim Story has taken a tried and true formula and once again, it seemed to work.
