Is it possible to know another person without meeting or speaking with them? Ellen Holder (Annabella Sciorra - The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and Sam Lester (Matthew Broderick) learn to care about each other while sharing an apartment on different nights. Brian McVeigh (Kevin Anderson) is the third partner in the time-share brownstone apartment in New York.

McVeigh is planning to marry Janet (Justine Bateman) but he is not eager to give up his nights in his bachelor style apartment. Sam, on the other hand, is attempting to get over his ex-girlfriend (Jeanne Tripplehorn - Basic Instinct) and Ellen is part of a fading marriage. Ellen learns of Sam's interest in gourmet meals, art books and film reviews.

The comedy begins when Brian and Sam exchange a nighty not on the schedule and Ellen misses her connection with Sam and ends up with Brian who is a great disappointment. More a warm and pleasant romantic comedy than one that brings loud laughs, the very fine cast explores relationships based on dreams, aspirations and respect rather than a quick jump under the covers based on physical attraction.
