Jason Patric plays Nick Tellis, an undercover Detroit narcotics detective in this rough, violent drama.

In the opening sequence (filmed with a hand held camera) he chases a drug dealer through back yards and alleys, when he finally catches up to the guy, Nick accidentally shoots an innocent bystander.

The young cop is put on leave from the department at partial pay following the accident, and finds it difficult to support his wife and baby with a lower income.  So when the higher-ups request that he come back to investigate the murder of Detective Calvess, another cop working narcotics, he reluctantly takes the job.

The Captain believes that Nick will be invaluable in the investigation because of his past involvement with drug dealers, snitches and low life.  He does use his connections, but he also has to team up with Calvess' former partner in the bargain.

Detective Henry Oak (Ray Liotta), who's determined to find out who beat and murdered his friend, is one mean son of a gun.  Liotta beefed up for this role, and the added weight makes him look more formidable.  He's the kind of guy who would rather take a suspect behind a building and beat a confession out of him than wait for the slow process.

The film is one of the darkest and most violent produced.  Although I wanted to look away from some of the shocking scenes, the outstanding performances kept me riveted on the action.

Patric is fitting as the loving husband and father who got a little too close to the slimy world that he was supposed to be protecting us from.  He has top billing; however, Liotta steals the show with his over-the-top bravado.  The sight of him strutting around with his long black coat sweeping behind him, while he shouts obscenities and waves his shot gun in the air, lets us know he is not one to be reasoned with.

Writer/Director Joe Carnahan gives us a gritty, mesmerizing crime story in which Liotta delivers one of the year's most powerful performances.
