Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) is back with her father, Harry (Dan Aykroyd), and stepmother (Jamie Lee Curtis), who is pregnant.

Chlumsky is the same precocious bright young woman. She's a great student and chooses as her topic for an essay her mother, who died a short time after her birth.

The search leads her to California where she interviews a number of her mother's school and soul mates. With the help of Nick (Austin O'Brien) their search brings them to Grauman's Chinese Theater, the LaBrea Tarpits and the back lot of a motion picture studio.

Like a detective she searches for her identity, wondering at times if she is who she believes she is. Her search is rewarded when a film of her mother is given to her and she speaks with her favorite poet who it turns out was her mother's teacher at UCLA. Vada also experiences her firs teen kiss.

The further adventures of Vada are a good family entertainment.
