Based on the Cassandra Clare books, this supernatural thriller is directed by Harald Zwart.
Starring Lily Collins as Clary Fray, who is in over her head when she discovers her mother has disappeared.   She goes home to find the apartment in a shambles and a dog who turns into a slithering, slimy demon.   But, for someone who finds out she is a descendant of warriors, what can you expect?
She's drawn into a dark world of warlocks, demons and shadow hunters (half angel / half human), and although she has to defend herself against all kinds of creepy creatures, she handles it pretty well, even resorting to a heavy fry pan to whack them over the head with.
The New York setting adds to the gothic drama.   The sets are sinister-looking and quite good and some of the CGI battles are also well done, except for the phony looking dog creature.
This is a weaker film of its genre, as its story is too complicated and too long.    Of course its aimed at Twilight fans and it should appeal to teen girls looking for a fantasy thriller with a bit of young love thrown in for good measure.
