Sofia Coppola paints with an expressive contemporary brush in examining a young woman immersed in a lavish lifestyle in 1768 France. Marie Antoinette marks Coppola's second outing with Kirsten Dunst after The Virgin Suicides, and the actress brings it on from the ideas and experiences of the titular figure who would become the release for a gradually angry nation.
With a production that breathes of impressionism and New Romantic, a soulful vision may counter historical purists with eye candy that swirls from ebullient music to lovely costumes. Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Steve Coogan, Rip Torn, and Danny Huston are featured in a picture that helps one understand what life may have been like for Marie in a time not so dissimilar from today in a culture obsessed with celebrity.
