This delightful computer animated comedy has four animal friends confined at the Central Park Zoo who escape for a jaunt in the big city.
Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra, (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett-Smith) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) romp around the Big Apple until they're apprehended by the New York City Police at Grand Central Station.
But the four who wanted to experience a little fun, aren't prepared for the trip that they are sent on. Packed off on a ship, they end up in Madagascar, where an energetic tribe of Lemurs headed by their King Julien interact in various ways with the confused innocent sheltered animals. Living on their own, realization comes quickly as to how good things were back at the zoo and, even though they were confined, their needs were provided for.
With each animal holding its own special traits - Alex is a pompous egotist, Marty an unsure neurotic, Gloria a sassy lady and Melman a hypochondriac, the comedy flows.
The most fun, however is the wacky penguins, who want to make their way to Antarctica for frozen sushi.
The colors pop off the screen, from the detailed New York skyline to the vivid green valleys of Madagascar, it all looks very real.
There is plenty of comedy that is aimed squarely at adults, but the songs and frenetic pace of the characters is designed to appeal to even the youngest kids.
