This explicit, entertaining documentary from Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) has its mind on the cultural strife amid the growth of pornography in America long before the internet.

Inside Deep Throat looks provocatively at freedom of expression from the source film released in 1972 that brought porn into the mainstream. Even director Gerard Damiano stated that he didn’t think it was a very good movie.

The New York Times called it “porn-chic” and Erica Jong thought that it brought sex out of the closet. Bailey and Barbato get into the time of the movement of sexual liberation and counterculture and looks at the film’s stars, Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems. She had a gift for fellatio and he was an assistant cameraman who was the timely fill-in for the male lead part.

Deep Throat, which was a nickname for an informant in the Nixon Watergate scandal, brought many women to the cinema and the illicit sex act was being more easily referenced. The probing documentary narrated by Dennis Hopper gets into the political and legal battles of the film and a presidential commission investigation which never got the desired conclusions.

Lovelace later told in her memoir of her regret of being in the film and what stress it brought to her life, but eventually used the part for an erotic magazine layout. Reems was prosecuted by federal authorities for accepting the role of a doctor and is now a realtor in Park City, Utah after recovering from alcoholism.

Maybe not much has changed as porn never could really co-exist with the mainstream as video became the wave for the medium. History and interviews are shrewdly weaved together by the editors as plenty of salient thought is offered by Gore Vidal, Cosmopolitan’s Helen Gurley Brown, Norman Mailer, and Alan Dershowitz among others. From talk of its mafia influences to all of the moral political battles around it, this new Throat exam is more than a funny expose around the sexual revolution. It may not go as far in terms of originality as some may wish, but it could very well hit the spot for many who’ve lived through it.
