Winona Ryder stars along with an impressive cast of terrific actresses in this tale of heartache and romance.

Ryder plays Finn, a woman, who's having second thoughts about marrying her fiance, so she goes to here grandmother's house for the summer to sort out her feelings.

Finn's grandmother, played by lovely Ellen Burstyn and her sister (Anne Bancroft) host a quilting group made up of lifelong friends. Kate Nelligan, Jean Simmons and Alfre Woodard meet to piece together a wedding gift for Finn with memories from their past.

Each quilter tells her story by using flashbacks. One has a philandering husband, one's husband packs a suitcase and leaves in the middle of the night, and another's husband dies at a young age. None have led happy lives and their hurt has made them bitter and more willing to accept whatever life throws at them.

The trend towards films featuring female casts (Boys on the Side, Moonlight and Valentino) is one that I heartily endorse. This fine example of love, betrayal and friendship is a great addition to that growing list.
