This Japanese horror flick won't help the franchise last much longer based on a succession of shocks and three narratives connected by spirits of a cursed house. Sarah Michelle Gellar, looks to have a more prominent part in The Return, and her brief role as an obsessed, insane sister, once an exchange student in Japan, ends with a thud.

Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Jennifer Beals get more screentime as Aubrey, sister of Gellar's Karen, and a new Chicago stepmother, as The Grudge 2 works its initial shocks into redundancy. Even director Takashi Shimuzu doesn't have the eye of his scary dark-haired boy to make one care as the rage-like virus grows exponentially after a boarding school pupil disapppears.
