The comical repercussions of The Favor result from Kathy (Harley Jane Kozak) dreaming of sexual encounters with her high school lover, Tom, which cause her to ask her friend Emily (Elizabeth McGovern) to look him up on a trip to Denver. Emily's encounter with Tom (Ken Wahl) is very successful, so much so that Kathy becomes jealous of her good friend. All the resulting complexities strain Kathy's marriage to Peter (Bill Pullman), a math professor, and Emily's relationship with her boyfriend Elliott (Brad Pitt).
Harley Jane Kozak is enchanting as the woman with the seven year itch, and Brad Pitt is engaging as McGovern's younger lover. McGovern is offbeat and appealing as a savvy, sexy thirty-year-old.
Larry Miller plays the obnoxious Joe Dubin, a silly college professor who can's open his mouth without insulting someone.
The parts are interesting but the don't line up as a whole any better than Peter's quadratic equations.
