George C. Scott stars as a police lieutenant investigating a series of grotesque deaths with are similar to murders committed 15 years before. The killer had been electrocuted and died...or did he? Satan possesses the killer's body (played by Brad Dourif) and he returns to kill again. There are graphic descriptions of the murders, but the audience never views the bodies, and except for one climatic scene, there is no blood, vomit or twisting heads. That may be a disappointment to some, but there are plenty of tense moments and good acting by Scott and Dourif.
