Dragonfly

Dragonfly

Hollywood tries once again to provide us with a thriller of the supernatural nature with a surprise ending.  Dragonfly is just that film.

Starring Kevin Costner as Doctor Joe Darrow who is the head of the emergency room at a Chicago hospital.  We also see in the opening credits the loss of his wife Emily played by Susanna Thompson who is pregnant with their first child.  It is this loss that the film is based on.

Through the 103 minute running time you are shown clues and rarely spooked.  This is no Sixth Sense or What Lies Beneath.  Thankfully it is not the usual three hour Costner film.  Costner wanders though this film as though in a trance and truly offers no character you can buy into.  The clues are clumsy and the "surprise" ending is figured out within the first 25 minutes of the film.  With what can only be called cameos, you will also see veteran actors of the likes of Kathy Bates, Linda Hunt and Jay Thomas.  Even these fine people could not save this film from being utterly boring.

The fact that this poor script and direction can not be saved by the star power of Costner is a statement that Hollywood should listen to.  Film goers pay big money to see these works and should not be forced to sit through this type of dribble.  While I'm sure the hype when the video hits in a couple of months will compare it to Sixth Sense and others, don't buy in...save your money and rent anything else.

As for the surprise ending - look at the messengers.
