Give credit to Debra Winger who plays Martha Horgan, a simple woman with little beauty and no poise and very believable in the role. It is a quality performance that should be noticed. Her Aunt Frances (Barbara Hershey) is the guardian, who at times protects her niece but cannot prohibit the traditional fox on the farm when a handy man (Gabriel Byrne) arrives on the scene.

The handy man is attractive to both women and when Frances lover back goes back to his wife, the game is on.

With very fine performances, the film falters with a storybook ending which takes away from the drama and tragedy which would be more likely in the situations which develop. Winger's performance, however, overshadows the weaknesses -- it should be seen.
