Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin star as Beldar and Prymaat Conehead, emissaries from Remulak, a planet 26 light years away from Earth. When they take a wrong turn at Machu Pichu, it causes them to crash land in the middle of New York's East River and they become illegal aliens in the United States. They settle in and work at jobs like cab driving and machine repair while staying one step ahead of INS Assistant Deputy Commissioner Gorman Seedling (Michael McKean Laverne and Shirley).

Forced to remain on Earth while a rescue ship comes for them, they begin a family and daughter Connie (Michelle Burke) grows into a normal American teenager except for the cone on her head. The film then becomes a situation comedy with a number of funny situations and sight gags which are not enough to sustain a full-length feature.

Fans will enjoy phrases such as "Parental Units" and a big screen view of the old Saturday Night Live segments. Overall there are some clever ideas and characters but in the end it is not sufficiently satisfying.
