Christmas with the Kranks
Christmas with the Kranks
Starring: Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd

What has Hollywood become when it can not make fun of Christmas or in this case the need to avoid it. Christmas with the Kranks is based on a John Grisham book titled “Skipping Christmas” which has an absolutely wonderful premise: screw everyone, we’re spending all the Christmas money on ourselves.

Staring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, Christmas with the Kranks is a weak attempt to copy the success of films like Christmas Vacation but it falls short. When their daughter goes into the Peace Corps for the holidays the Kranks decide to go on a cruise much to the chagrin of their neighbors who believe Christmas is "Everything."

While there are a few moments of comedy, it is all formula and no surprises. Even when the daughter decides to return home for Christmas with a new boyfriend and the whole neighborhood rallies to rescue the Kranks from their own selfishness the attempt at comedy is irritating.

There is even the last ditch effort to redeem with a gift to a dying neighbor who accepts when Allen states the only reason he is giving the gift is that he did not buy cancellation insurance; what a hero!

If you want laughs, skip this one, just go to the mall and watch the frustrated shoppers and get the same helpless feeling of being trapped for nearly two hours in a theater seat hoping to find a simple moment to laugh at.
