Martin Harvey (Martin Short), when he learns his favorite uncle has died and willed him a boat, begins to have visions of exotic ports and adventures in paradise. JHe and his family (Mary Kay Place, Meadow Sisto, Benjamin Salisbury) head for the Caribbean to claim their independence. As might be expected, the once beautiful craft is now in need of serious repair.
Captain Ron (Kurt Russell) a happy-go-lucky seafarer with questionable nautical skills is hired to bring the boat back to the United States for sale. Between Captain Ron's limitations and Short's confusion the trip north becomes an adventure, complete with modern day pirates and an unintentional diversion to Cuba.
This is not a big winner but it will provide some fun as family entertainment. Russell as the comic against Short as the straight man works quite well. Sisto is very unappealing as the obnoxious 16 year old. Salisbury as the son who learns to play games with "guerrillas" and to drink beer with Captain Ron fits well in his role and Place is perfect as the understanding attractive wife.
