Director Penelope Spheeris stated the casting was brutal for this film. Well, she did a fine job casting but the screenplay by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal is all down hill.
Jed is played by Jim Varney (Ernest Scared Stupid), Cloris Leachman is Granny, Dabney Coleman is the greedy Mr. Drysdale, Diedrich Bader is both Jethro and Jethrine, Lilly Tomlin in well cast as the silly, obnoxious Miss Hathaway and Erika Eleniak plays Elly May. Other interesting casting involves Zsa Zsa Gabor as a woman who is in a police line up for hitting a cop and Buddy Ebsen as Barnaby Jones.
The script is filled with situations and lines which may be comical once but when repeated four and five times wear on the audience. One such use is giving the finger which not only becomes dull but is obnoxious.
The cast is fine. Director Bader should have worried about the script.
