Samuel L. Jackson is a tough Sergeant heading a dangerous training mission in the Panama jungle.  His small band of soldiers outfitted with full gear, live ammunition and 80 lb. packs are helicoptered in during a full blown hurricane.

When only two soldiers return alive, the Base Captain calls on his old friend DEA agent and ex-ranger, Tom Hardy (John Travolta) to help Lt. Julia Osborne (Connie Neilsen with an unbelievable Southern accent) to question the survivors.

Their story, told through flashbacks, changes depending on who is telling a version.  Alternate versions are depicted over and over to the point where the truth is impossible to know.

It's obviously the intent of the writers to have so many twists and turns that the audience is continually guessing.  However, the characters' names are difficult to keep straight and add to that the night setting and pounding rain, and we are really confused.

The good cast also includes Harry Connick, Jr., Giovanni Ribisi, Tayne Diggs and Timothy Daly as the Captain.  Travolta, looking very buff, gives his best as the macho interrogator and even Neilsen holds her own in the male dominated film.

The premise is a good one and if explained more cohesively, could have been an enjoyable mental exercise.  Who doesn't like to solve a good puzzle?  But, when the plot is impossible to follow - it's just plain frustrating.
