Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis ~ myth or real ~ has sparked imaginations over the years.  Atlantis: The Lost Empire is Disney's contribution to the legend.  It succeeds as a movie the whole family can go to, but falls short of its potential.

The story revolves around Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) and his dream of following in his grandfather's footsteps and continuing his work to find the lost city of Atlantis.  He gets his wish when an expedition is put together by philanthropist Preston Whitmore (John Mahoney), an old friend and fellow explorer of Milo's grandfather.  While Milo is in it for the discovery, the crew has other plans for what can be found in the city lost to the sea.

The underwater world and creatures are amazing and the city is beautiful.  It is in the characters where Disney is lacking.  While the scenery is striking, the people come across as cartoonish rather than as animated humans.  A talented cast does their best to try to give life to stereotypical characters.  Whether animated or human, characters need to evolve and be developed.  Without the usual big musical numbers in Disney animated films to help drive the story and the characters, the movie falls short.

I was looking forward to and expecting more from Disney.
