Along Came Polly
Along Came Polly
Starring Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Philip Seymour Hoffman,
Debra Messing, Alec Baldwin, Hank Azaria

Ben Stiller somewhat redeems himself after Duplex by re-teaming with John Hamburg in the awkward, but crudely funny Along Came Polly.

His Reuben Feffer has much to endure like his Meet The Parents Greg Focker character in a uptight, very sensitive way that plays pretty well opposite co-stars Jennifer Aniston Bruce Almighty and Hank Azaria Shattered Glass.

Generally, Stiller's fans will find this comparable to his work in Zoolander with jokes coming out like Feffer's gastrointestinal problems. It's a broad, low-minded comedy with a decent roster of players like Debra Messisng, Alec Baldwin, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Employed as a risk assessor in an insurance firm, Reuben has been a conservative player in his personal life. This new variation on There's Something About Mary with some twinking of Forces of Nature has his perfect soul-mate and newlywed Lisa (Messing) drifting away on a St. Bart honeymoon with a French deep sea diving teacher (Azaria).

The jilted, down Reuben is awakened back in the Big Apple by his slovenly closest friend, unsuccessful actor Sandy Lyle (Hoffman). An art opening offers the chance to meet an old classmate, Polly Prince, acted as a free-spirit by Aniston.

Along Came Polly has some of its notable bits on dates at salsa clubs and in restaurants with an upset stomach and Stiller's brand of physical comedy coming into play. Though there's some decent support by Jsu Garcia as a dance instructor it's mostly shrill work for Hoffman, Messing, and Baldwin as an unflattering boss. Bryan Brown, once hot in FX turns up as a wild businessman.

Hamburg has a feel for what talent Stiller and Aniston's easygoing, uncritical waitress can provide, notwithstanding a blind ferret. Along Came Polly is a smooth production by Hollywood's standards, contrived for anal-retentive types looking for something to annoy themselves out of normalcy.
